Pier 25 and Pier 26 Construction

Pier 25 & Pier 26

Progress

On July 6, 2006, the Hudson River Park Trust broke ground on the Tribeca section of the park – also known as “Hudson River Park Segment 3.”

On July 23, 2008, the Trust completed and opened the area from Laight Street to just below Pier 40. It includes passive lawns, a tree-lined esplanade, native grasses and wooden boardwalks. Lights for night play have been added to tennis courts and a new basketball court.

Segment 3's design emphasizes the environment, active recreation and small boating opportunities. It also focuses on the Hudson River itself. Among its features will be:

  • The reconstruction of Pier 25, which is located between approximately Franklin and N. Moore Streets. The completed Pier 25 will include a miniature golf course, beach volleyball courts, children's playground, town dock and moorings, locations for historic boats and a flexible artificial lawn on the western end.
  • The reconstruction of Pier 26 located between approximately N. Moore and Hubert Streets. Once funding is available, Pier 26 will feature a boathouse for non-motorized boats, an estuarium and a cafe.
  • The construction of the upland park and public esplanade will include a habitat planting zone, lawns, seating areas, a dog run, overlooks, a skate park, basketball courts, public art, and other active and passive recreation opportunities. The upland area between Laight St. and Pier 40 will open later in 2008, with the balance to come as funding is available.
  • The construction of various small park buildings including public restrooms to support the park program.

This project is made possible by a grant from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, which is funded through Community Development Block Grants from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and additional federal funding obtained by Congressman Jerrold Nadler.

Segment 3 is being built by the Hudson River Park Trust and is expected to be opened in or before 2010.
