Hudson River Park began its construction
phase in 1998. The first phase to be completed is in Greenwich Village, and two other
sections, Clinton Cove and Pier
84, have also since opened. Together, these new parklands provide
everything from playgrounds to sunbathing lawns to two striking
non-motorized boathouses.
Several additional
park areas have also been finished and are open for public enjoyment.
These include nearly 3.5 acres of ballfields at Pier
40, the eastern portion of Chelsea
Waterside Park, three tennis
courts (two doubles and one single) south of Houston
Street, and 14th Street Park.
In July 2006, Governor George Pataki and Mayor Michael Bloomberg
opened the first section of “Promenade South” –
a striking new walkway along West Street in Lower Manhattan between
Battery Place and West Thames Street. Designed and built by the
New York State Department of Transportation, Promenade South is
part of Segment 2 of Hudson River Park.
This beautifully landscaped corridor will be expanded to the north
over the next several years.
Pier 84 at 44th Street was also completed, with
the ribbon-cutting
ceremony occurring on October 17, 2006.
Most recently, Pier 66 at 26th Street and the adjacent upland
area were completed, with the ribbon-cutting
ceremony occurring on December 11, 2006.
