Construction of Pier 66 and the upland area between 26th and 29th
Streets is complete. The
Governor, Mayor and the community cut ribbon on December 11.
The old timber deck at Pier 66 was removed, new piles were installed
and a new deck added. At the end of Pier
66 - newly rebuilt as a boating pier, with a boathouse for kayaks
and slips for small motorized vessels – is the Long Time
water wheel, by Paul Ramirez Jonas. This 26 foot diameter stainless
steel reminder of the Hudson River’s milling history turns
unpredictably with the tide and links us with both the river’s
past and future
The planted areas are designed to enhance the natural habitat by
attracting birds and butterflies, and two new works of art designed
by local artists sit at opposite ends of the site: Two Too Large
Tables, by Allan and Ellen Wexler is located at 29th Street
and provides sculptural seating and shade in two complimentary stainless
steel settings.
