In
July 2006, Governor
George Pataki and Mayor Michael Bloomberg opened the first section
of “Promenade South” – a striking new walkway
along West Street in Lower Manhattan between Battery Place and West
Thames Street. The Promenade was designed and built by the New York
State Department of Transportation. This beautifully landscaped
corridor will be expanded to the north over the next several years.
Unlike the rest of the project, Segment 2 does not border the Hudson
River. Instead, it runs along the eastern side of Battery Park City.
Detailed design of this area will not commence until final plans
for the reconstruction of West Street in the World Trade Center
area have been determined. However, the future uses will build on
existing uses, and will include a dog run, community garden, lawns,
and children's play areas.
