
Many opportunities exist in Hudson River
Park for educational advancement. Internships and special projects
for academic credit are frequently accommodated, and support for
assignments, projects, and academic papers is available by contacting
Park staff. Please send a letter of interest to: Info@hrpt.state.ny.us
for further information. Internships focused on specific HRPT
activities have focused on legal, design, education, events, and
recreational programs.
Student Internships and Projects
The River
Project has a marine biology internship program. The fireboat
John J. Harvey
at Pier 66a encourages volunteer
crews. Biz
Kids conducts classes in the performing arts from their studio
on Pier 40. The Intrepid
Sea
- Air - Space Museum
(re-opening in Fall 2008) provides a leadership training program.
City-As School runs a credited high school science class
at Pier 40.
Teacher Opportunities
Kayak instruction, volunteer training and guided tours are offered
at the New York
Kayak Company (Pier 40), the Manhattan
Kayak Company (Pier 66), and the Downtown
Boathouse (Pier 96). Manhattan
Youth, Chelsea
Piers, and the Pier,
Park & Playground Association offers instructors for after
school, weekend, and summer programs geared towards recreation.
The Intrepid
Sea - Air - Space Museum (re-opening in Fall 2008) offers
professional development training days in science, history and
leadership.
Research Initiatives
Cornell University’s Natural Resources Department, in conjunction
with Cornell Cooperative Extension, in currently in the midst
of a study researching the effects of dredging on the health the
fish in two Park locations. Learn more about the project at www.environment.cornell.edu.
Harvard University is surveying bikeway users in the park as part
of a Nation-wide project.
The
River Project also has a number of ongoing research initiatives.
