Pier 84 Gardening Thrives as a Community Affair

October 25

The gardens, groves and lawns of Pier 84 are a riverfront gem — a popular destination for all Park fans and a beloved backyard for Hell’s Kitchen. This is especially true for the West 44th Street Block Association and Friends of Pier 84, who maintain the Pier 84 Community Garden; and, thanks to collaboration with Hudson River Park Friends and community leadership, a brand new irrigation system will help keep this neighborhood mainstay green and growing!

The lovely Pier 84 Community Garden has oft given dedicated volunteers a chance to nurture their green thumbs, but with only a hose to irrigate, keeping the garden thriving was a challenge. Working with the West 44th Street Block Association and Friends of Pier 84 leadership, the Hudson River Park Friends Advocacy Committee sprang to action, securing approvals and raising necessary funds.

With the generous support of Friends Board Member Anthony Borelli, whose firm Edison Properties donated $2,500, and Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal who granted a $2,500 match, the Pier 84 garden now has a revamped irrigation system that integrates a new sprinkler system to help keep this charming resource flourishing and enable volunteers to focus their beautification efforts.

We were thrilled to see this exciting milestone celebrated last month, and we look forward to continuing to bring together Park and community leaders to keep our beautiful backyard thriving for all of our dedicated neighbors. Here’s to many flourishing and green seasons ahead in the Pier 84 Community Garden!
