Message from the Chair

First envisioned almost 30 years ago, Hudson River Park and the Hudson River Park Act will celebrate their tenth anniversary in 2008. In late June of 1998, this important legislation officially gave birth to both the Park and the Trust as its governing body. The passage of the Act was the culmination of more than 20 years of effort on the parts of civic, environmental, and community groups, as well as elected officials and city and state agencies whose ultimate goal was to build a spectacular waterfront park on the west side of Manhattan.

With roughly 50 percent of the park now complete and another 30 percent under construction, Hudson River Park has become one of the City’s best assets, increasing in popularity annually. Aside from its magnificent landscaping and wealth of free recreational and educational activities, I am especially proud of the extraordinary level of maintenance and care that the park receives – both on land and in the 400 acres that comprise New York State’s only designated urban Estuarine Sanctuary.

On behalf of our entire Board and staff, we wish to thank all of those who have contributed their energy, talent, ideas and resources to making Hudson River Park the unique success story it has become. We hope you enjoy your experiences here.
