This area includes Pier 66a (the historic Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Float Transfer Bridge), Pier 66 (recently opened), Pier 72 (pile field) and Pier 76 (NYPD Tow Pound). A heliport is currently located on the bulkhead between 29th and 30th Streets. Also within this zone are Pier 78 (privately owned and operated by NY Waterway), Pier 79 (ferry terminal), and Piers 81 and 83 (World Yacht and Circle Line). Pier 84 is complete and open to the public.

Piers 66a and 66 Cross Street: 26th St.
Pier 76 Cross Street: 36th St.
Pier 81 Cross Street: 41st St.
Pier 83 Cross Street: 43th St.
Pier 84 Cross Street: 44th St.

One of the Park’s largest and busiest piers, Pier 84 is located at West 44th Street, just north of the Circle Line. This prominent location means that Pier 84 will serve millions of tourists and New Yorkers each year.

The design includes a formal plaza with seating and a dynamic water display fountain, a large green lawn, and one of the Park’s four non-motorized boathouses. Also on the pier are a community garden and dog run. Construction is continuing on several additional elements, including a water-based play and education area for children. Next spring, a waterside cafe, park store and bike rental facility will complete the experience.

Pier 66 and the adjacent upland area opened for public use in December 2006 and features a non-motorized boathouse and slips for sailboats and other small craft. Pier 66a has fully reopened for public recreation as well.

Today, portions of this area are under construction as future public piers, while other areas are still alive with commercial maritime uses, including tour boats and river ferries.

In the Future
If the City is able to find an appropriate relocation site for the tow pound currently located on Pier 76, at least 50% of that pier will be dedicated to park use. The balance will remain under New York City control and will likely be used for commercial purposes. The maritime transportation and commercial recreational uses on Piers 78, 79, 81 and 83 will continue.
